told us look like pipe bombs. so police are still in there searching, trying to learn if those packs and canisters are, indeed, explosive before they can sound the all-clear. harry. >> smith: wyatt andrews outside discovery headquarters tonight. thanks. our other big story is hurrican earl. the governors of north carolina, virginia, and maryland have declared states of emergency as the storm moves closer and grows stronger. it is a category four again with 135 mile an hour winds and it cuts an imposing image in the latest photo from space. at last report, earl was about 600 miles south-southeast of cape hatteras, north carolina. it could reach there late tomorrow or early friday, then roll up the east coast. hurricane watches and warnings are up as far north as cape cod. kelly cobiella is in kill devil hills, north carolina, tonight and has the latest. kelly, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, harry despite a picture-perfect beach day here, some tourists and locals alike on the most remote of the islands spent it packing up because hurrican earl's winds and rain could be close

people in maryland are doing to prepare for us. >> rough surf and waves and ocean city are only a preview of what's to come, earl plowing through the caribbean and roaring ahead up the eastern seaboard expected to come close to maryland. >> we're monitoring the situation very closely. we have a heightened awareness, should it be necessary, we'll take protective mitigation efforts. >> this hurricane is very likely on the current track going to affect the beaches of ocean city and probably cause a lot of erosion and fair amount of damage. >> the governor says he's been in close contact with ocean city's mayor and decision should come by tomorrow on whether the town which will swell for quarter million people will be evacuated. >> we have to be on guard these storms can do a lot of damage. >> in 2003 the powerful his bell left $1 billion in damage in its wake. >> it was terrible. >> darrell lived through it. one of the hardest hit areas for more than 200 homes were destroyed. he is also watching for any potential flooding from earl. >> what's going to happen is going to happen, hopefully we'

complete coverage continues with derek valcourt. he is at the scene. he joins us live, via the phone. >>> there is a lot of tension. obviously, a lot of questions for employees of discovery communications who want to know exactly what is going on inside their building. many people were at work around 1:00 this afternoon, when an announcement came over the loud speaker, telling them to make themselves secure in their office. then a massive e-mail went out, at about 1:20, warning them to lock themselves down in their office. if there was some potential danger in the building. another e-mail went out at about 1:52, trying to explain to employees how they would be able to get out. all of the employees were taken up to the top floor of the 7th, 8th, and 9th floor of the building. and then they were all escorted out a fire escape. right now, police are here on the scene. they are briefing the media. i'll have an update for you in just a few moments. >> derek valcourt, reporting live from the phone. the discovery is a very busy section of silver spring. bruce johnson filed this report a sho

coast. >>> "operation new dawn." president obama declares an end to the u.s. operation in iraq. >> we have met our responsibilities. now it's time to turn the page. >>> and survival story. a new york man falls 39 stories, lands on a car and lives. this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, september 1, 2010. >>> good morning, everybody. and thanks so much for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. this morning hurricane earl remains on a path to sideswipe the east coast. the first evacuations have already been ordered. earl is expected to move northeast of the bahamas today packing 135-mile-an-hour winds. it's a large category 4 storm with hurricane-force winds extending outward 90 miles. earl is moving towards the northwest and is expected to glance much of the east coast. north carolina has ordered tourists to evacuate ocracoke island this morning. a hurricane watch is in effect from north of surf city, north carolina, to the virginia border. but it is still too close to tell just how close earl might come to land. don teague reports. >> reporter: whipping angry winds, seen from a window

, as that storm passes by as a major storm. now, the time frame for us is going to be more so thursday night into friday. then it's really going to kick ought of here to the east, eventually. but the latest we have to update you on is take a look at this pink area. hurricane watch goes into effect as the storm is approaching us in the next day or so. for more on this, here is tim. >> what we have been doing, of course, bernadette, showed you the latest track. we have been talking about the consistency also of the model. this is what we called the spaghetti plot. it is basically many different models, compiled to show you the different consistencies of the path, where it is expected to move. the other models all have this, moving right on up the east coast, as bernadette mentioned, and moving out to sea. but the consistency here and the collaborative thinking, between all of the models is that it definitely will be moving through. and again, that time frame will be friday into saturday. the beaches all along the east coast, from the outer banks right on up into new england. we need to really

for the public's safety. >> reporter: the u.s. government is also helping coordinate the response with fema. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >>> and first warning weather coverage continues with bob turk with an upcoming view of the track, bob. >> this just in, take a look the only thing i'm noticed is a very slight shift to the east not the west. but it's a strong hurricane expected, it'll probably be category two right off our coast sometime friday afternoon. right now moving northwest at 15. a closer look at the storm by friday evening we expect it to be some where east of the ridge, probably east of new jersey. but you see that cone has just moved just enough off the maryland coast. now these are all the models together, for the most of it 99% still have the storm off the ocean. continuing to move quickly away from the region, once the system off to the west will influence it. there are two other factors that impact the direction this storm is going to take and just how bad it could be. i'll explain, coming up in my full forecast. >> thank you, bob. stay with wjz for the latest on hurrica
